Now in its 8th year in the MotoGP, KTM wants to continue raising the bar in 2024. A year during which the Austrian constructor aims to fight for the World Championship, after having established itself as the second best in the 2023 Championship, finishing only behind the Ducati. Going up against eight Desmosedicis won’t be an easy challenge, but the future seems to promise great things for the Mattighofen constructor. Starting next season, they’ll also be able to count on their new entry, Pedro Acosta, who’s debuting in the MotoGP with the GasGas Factory Racing Tech3 team.
“We’re working in the right direction, and the one we’ve chosen isn’t the simplest. We have our own engine, our own suspensions ... It’s a complete KTM package. I think things have been done really well,” Marc Coma, General Manager for KTM’s Spanish branch, stated in an interview with Marca.
Despite still being relatively young, the MotoGP project has evolved to the point of becoming one of the flagship programs of the Austrian brand, as the 47-year-old also acknowledged when asked if the RC16 can be considered one of the best MotoGPs on the track.
“Yes, the bike has really developed this year, and we hope to continue evolving in this direction. It’ll now be interesting with Acosta. I think the team is very good, but the road ahead is still long,” Coma replied. “It’s clear that eight Ducatis don’t make things easy. The championship would be much more interesting if it were a bit more balanced.”
There’s great trepidation regarding Acosta’s debut in the MotoGP, and the five-time winner of the Dakar doesn’t hide a certain admiration for the 19-year-old, who’s at the start of the Premier Class after winning two World Championships in his first three years as a World Championship rider.
“Without underestimating anyone else, I think he has something special, something different. In terms of riding, in terms of everything,” Marc admitted. “Logically, this is an important leap. You can’t ask him to win the championship in his first year, but I think he’s definitely one of the future stars of the MotoGP.”
